Highly integrated PMICs do solve real problems. If you’re building a space-constrained product like a wearable or compact consumer device, collapsing multiple rails into a single IC reduces BOM complexity, shortens layout cycles, and removes a lot of analog design burden.

For teams without deep power expertise, integration becomes a forcing function toward a “good enough” power architecture—fast.

But “good enough” is doing a lot of heavy lifting.


The Case For Integration

Integration optimizes for organizational efficiency, not just electrical performance.

  • Fewer design variables
  • Reduced validation scope
  • Simplified procurement

In high-volume consumer systems, those are often the dominant constraints—not peak efficiency or thermal optimization.

Packing multiple converters into a single die creates localized thermal density.

With discrete designs, you can:

  • Some require ultra-high efficiency

Once you design in a PMIC, you’re locked into:

4. Suboptimal Efficiency (Rail-by-Rail)

This is the quiet tax of integration.

System-level efficiency may look fine, but individual rails—especially high-load or always-on rails—are often not optimized.

A discrete solution can outperform an integrated PMIC where it actually matters.

Early in my career, I was in a product pitch meeting at Texas Instruments.

We were presenting what we thought was a compelling integrated solution—clean architecture, reduced BOM, strong value proposition.

After the pitch, a Director pulled me aside and said:

“This is a great solution for the customer. But just so you know—we can make more margin selling discretes than this.”
